Modes of Being

It is easy to forget that we are natural beings. Most of the time, we fail to acknowledge that we are animals - we ignore our bodies, our desires, our instincts. We get caught up in arbitrary goals, in the swell of progress, in the past, in the future. We operate as complex emotional beings within an increasingly technological and seemingly boundless world. While the progression of technology and urban life is in many ways a positive, through this exhibition I hope to bring to awareness the need for a balanced lifestyle, a connection with emotion and the body, and the pursuit of goals that one finds personally meaningful.

From Orillia, Ontario, now living in Toronto, Ontario, Deanna Gisborne primarily makes acrylic paintings informed by her interest in psychology and existentialism. In her most recent body of work she has explored the themes of spirituality, technology, and the senses. The body is often present in her work, interacting with its environment in the style of magical realism, and in dialogue with the strains of modern life. Upon completing her undergraduate degree at York University as a double major in Psychology and Visual Art this term, Gisborne intends to continue expanding her practice and seeking new possibilities, engaging in self exploration, and connecting with the artistic community.
